Largest Latin American market

Brazil is the fifth-most-populous country in the world and Latin America's biggest economy.

Mobile-first, social-native users

Brazilian internet users are among the most active globally on WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok — your product lives or dies by how it feels on mobile in pt-BR.

Lusophone Africa upside

Angola and Mozambique are among Africa's fastest-growing mobile internet markets; pt-PT doubles as the lingua franca there.

How to start

Shipping Portuguese on Localize.to

1
Split pt-BR and pt-PT

Brazilian and European Portuguese differ enough in vocabulary, grammar and tone that a Brazilian user will immediately spot an EU-Portuguese UI, and vice versa. Ship them as separate target languages.

2
Import source and translate regionally

Assign a Brazilian native to pt-BR and a Portugal-based translator to pt-PT. Re-using the same translation across both is the single most common localization mistake.

3
Default to pt-BR if you must pick one

Brazil is ~80% of the Portuguese-speaking internet. If you can only ship one variant at launch, make it Brazilian and add European Portuguese later.

4
Fetch via API with the correct locale code

Request pt-BR or pt-PT explicitly from the Localize.to read API — never fall back to a generic pt, or you risk serving the wrong variant.

Common questions

Do I have to ship both pt-BR and pt-PT?

Not at launch. If you have to pick one, pick pt-BR — it covers the overwhelming majority of Portuguese-speaking internet traffic. Add pt-PT once you see real European Portuguese usage.

Are they really that different?

Yes. Different pronouns (você vs tu), different verb agreement, different vocabulary (tela vs ecrã for "screen"), different formal registers. Users instantly feel the mismatch.

What about Angola and Mozambique?

They align closer to pt-PT. A European Portuguese build serves them well.
